Helen Fisher, LCPC
For the past 20 years, I’ve been walking alongside individuals and couples as they navigate some of life’s most difficult challenges. My journey as a therapist began on the West Side of Chicago, working in methadone clinics with individuals battling heroin addiction. It was there that I learned the true meaning of resilience—witnessing people’s courage to keep showing up for themselves, even in the face of overwhelming hardship. That early work shaped me as a therapist and continues to ground me in compassion, respect, and belief in people’s capacity for change.
My approach today is both directive and compassionate. I believe therapy works best when clients feel both safe, seen, supported and guided. I attune closely to the people I work with, helping them find the words for feelings that have often remained unspoken or disconnected from. My goal is to create a space where clients feel understood and empowered to move toward healing and connection.
I am often asked why I am so deeply drawn to couples work—particularly affair recovery. The truth is, I’ve always been fascinated by relationships. What allows some couples to stay together for 50 years while others struggle to make it past five? Can the spark and excitement at the beginning of a relationship truly last over time? These questions have guided me for much of my career. But as I’ve built my own family, my curiosity has deepened into something more personal: I now understand just how much is at stake when couples can’t make it work—families, children, and the stability of the home itself.
Among the many areas of my practice, helping couples recover from infidelity has been the most rewarding. I’ve had the privilege of working with partners who arrive in despair, believing their relationship may not survive. To witness them rebuild trust, rediscover emotional intimacy, and often become more connected than they were before the affair is an incredible gift. These transformations remind me daily of why I do this work.
